While the lower body is incredibly important, the upper body is what tells the audience a story. Dancers tend to be overly focused on their legs and feet, often to the detriment of the upper body. This is one of my personal pet peeves as an educator. It is simply for switching sides in between combinations! Note: This does not apply when the combination dictates you turn away from the barre, such as with a détourné or soutenu. When it's time to change sides, we politely turn toward our partner. The reason? In class, the barre is our partner! When we are dancing, we lightly hold onto the barre as if we were holding our partner's hand. Today, I’m going to share with you 5 dance class etiquette rules that you might not know about yet:Īlways turn toward the barre when changing sides during ballet class There are some etiquette tips we learn early on: Arrive to class on time. You will become the type of dancer that others know they can count on to be prepared, consistent, and thoughtful - all qualities which are just as important (if not more so!) than your technique. Ultimately, the discipline and attentiveness you learn during your training will carry over into how you present yourself as a professional dancer. When you arrive at your class properly prepared with a mindset to learn, your teacher can focus on doing what they do best: teaching dance! Instead of focusing their energy on getting the class to stop talking, or leaning on the barre, etc…they can funnel all their energy into making you the absolute best dancer you can be. Fortunately, that’s what these beginning classes are for: learning how to learn! We are having fun and moving, but the most important skills we work on have nothing to do with the dance steps and everything to do with classroom etiquette.Īs we advance in the dance world, the skills we learn as young dancers only become more important. I have had many parents of littles come to me before their child starts dancing, worried that they won’t be able to follow directions. Ms.Maria, we will be with you as long as Natalia wants to dance.Dance class etiquette is one of the first things we learn when we step into a dance studio. Maria is so bad, why are all these comments so great about her and her studio? Some people need to grow up. Take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself, if Ms. Sometimes as adults we need to take the blame for our own actions and stop trying to place the blame where it doesn't belong. Maria then instead of some of her dance instructors. When my daughter was little I wish there was a Ms. Maria and all her staff are the greatest. We feel if someone has a problem with Maria then they should look at their behavior or their child's behavior. I have never ever ever heard anyone saying anything bad about Ms. She has been nothing but kind and professional. Maria and I myself and my daughter and our entire family just love her. My granddaughter has quite the bond with Ms. Maria, her caring, her warmth, her enthusiasm with all the children. Hi My name is Rosemary DeSalvatore and I have had my granddaughter dancing with Ms. The friendships, confidence, physical and emotional strength my daughter has gained from this dance studio is priceless. The studio even gives back to the community through a number of events throughout the year. Parents and care givers are just as amazing as the studio. My daughter is not the only one benefiting from attending classes here I am benefiting by being a part of the this remarkable community. Their knowledge of dance style, form and technique is top notch and they do more than just teach dance, they model compassion, strength, courage and determination. They are truly devoted to the dancers and their families. Miss Maria and her instructors are outstanding. They care about the development of skills, techniques and self esteem and want all their students to flourish. I never have to wonder if my daughter is in the appropriate skill level as the instructors take care to match students with class levels that challenge the student, but don't alienate or frustrate them. Professionalism that allows dancers to develop, improve and master their skills. There is a family friendly feel to the studio, but also a I can't say enough positive things about this studio. My daughter is starting on her 7th year at Miss Maria's School of Dance.
